At Pirbright Village Primary School, we believe that Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RHSE) plays an important role in helping children to lead happy, healthy, safe and responsible lives. Through our PSHE curriculum, we support children to develop positive relationships, understand their emotions, respect differences and make safe, informed choices as they grow. We use the Jigsaw 3–11 PSHE programme to deliver a progressive, age-appropriate curriculum, supported by learning in Science and Computing.

Our curriculum covers six key themes:
Being Me in My World – identity, belonging and responsibility.
Celebrating Difference – diversity, respect and inclusion.
Dreams and Goals – aspirations and resilience.
Healthy Me – physical health and emotional wellbeing.
Relationships – friendships, families, respect, boundaries and staying safe.
Changing Me – growing up, puberty and physical and emotional changes.
Children also learn about online safety, bullying, personal hygiene, healthy choices, bodily autonomy and where to seek help. Learning is carefully planned to reflect children's age, development and individual needs.
Lessons are delivered by class teachers in a safe, supportive and respectful environment. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore age-appropriate scenarios and develop the knowledge and confidence to manage relationships, recognise risks and seek support when needed. We recognise that every family is different and aim to ensure that all children feel valued, included and respected.
We value the partnership between school and home and welcome questions about our RHSE curriculum. Parents and carers can read our full RHSE policy and contact the school to discuss lesson content or resources.
Can I withdraw my child from RHSE?
Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory, and all pupils are expected to participate. Parents and carers cannot withdraw children from these subjects or from reproduction content taught as part of the National Curriculum for Science. Parents and carers do have the right to request withdrawal from some or all of the school's non-statutory sex education that goes beyond the Science curriculum. Please contact the Headteacher to discuss any concerns or requests. Appropriate alternative education will be provided where a child is withdrawn from non-statutory sex education.
